Chapter 1 is the first chapter of World of Goo. The title of the chapter is "The Goo Filled Hills." Chapter 1 takes place in summer. The song The Goo Filled Hills plays on the map.

This chapter introduces the player to the basics of World of Goo and introduces the first few species of Goo. As the player progresses through the levels, more of them are unlocked on the Chapter's main map screen, eventually leading up to the level "Regurgitation Pumping Station." After this last level is cleared, a cut-scene conclusion to Chapter 1 is seen and Chapter 2 is unlocked. After clearing the third level of the chapter, "Hang Low", the bonus sandbox area "World of Goo Corporation" is unlocked.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Unlike later chapters, (Such as Chapter 4) Chapter 1 is not a story-focused chapter. However, a story does exist. The first plot development is when World of Goo Corporation opens. The Corporation plays an even larger role in later chapters. The second plot development is at the end of Chapter 1, see Chapter ending.

Some parts of the chapter hint or show off thematic elements of World of Goo, such as "Tumbler" showing industrialist aesthetic, or "Hang Low" showing disturbance of the natural ecosystem, and both showing the continuous themes of industrialization- specifically the "You can't stop progress" mantra repeated throughout the game.

Chapter ending[]

After clearing "Regurgitation Pumping Station", the last level of chapter 1, a cutscene is shown. In this cutscene, the Goo structure built during Regurgitation Pumping Station is seen floating along, carried by Eyeball Balloon Goo. Along the side of the screen, slow, scrolling text concludes the chapter. It reads as follows:

"From very high up and with some totally huge new eyes,
the Goo Balls could see very far.
In every direction, they could see unexplored new islands,
each crawling with undiscovered new SPECIES OF GOO.
The gameplay possibilities would certainly be endless!
The Goo Balls hoped a brave adventurer would explore
their new discoveries...
... as they drifted higher and higher, they knew they
would never be back..."

From across a small divide, another mysterious pipe appeared up in the sky.

Hang Low Sign

Until now!

When the pipe broke through the ceiling above, the sunlight must have blinded these rare Albino GooBalls.

They didn't seem to notice when it began to snow.

Maybe they would wake up if they had something to jump onto.

-The Sign Painter

The sign in Impale Sticky, Reading: "The Goo Balls were excited to explore the mysterious pipe system..

Impale Sticky Sign

Impale Sticky[]

The Goo Balls were excited to explore the mysterious pipe system...

...even if it meant traversing ridiculously contrived terrain.

One of the goo balls seemed to say he felt like an armadillo. Moo!

Ivy Towers[]

The first page of the First Sign in Ivy Towers, reading: "A new species of GooBall!"

First Ivy Towers Sign

A new species of GooBall!

I must say, they look quite beautiful...

The first page of the second sign in Ivy Towers, reading: "If a goo ball falls into a well 10 meters deep..

Second Ivy Towers Sign

If a Goo Ball falls into a well 10 meters deep...

and climbs up 3 meters each day...

but slides down 2 meters at night...

will he still look fabulous in the morning?

...maybe if he were to brace against the walls as hard as he could, and believe in the power of friction...

...he could leave the ground behind...

The first page of the sign in Tumbler, reading: "Some winners are bigger than other winners!"

Totally delicious.

-sincerely, the Sign Painter

Fisty's Bog[]

Fisty swore he would never be like those tadpoles that grow up and shoot colored gems out of their mouths.

But he wondered what it might be like.

Tower of Goo[]

Go as fast as you can! They are stronger than you think...

They will have to work together to climb very high...

...A real Tower of Goo!

Some of them felt they had done something like this a long long time ago...

Ode to the Bridge Builder[]

As the sun set over the last of the hills, one of the Goo Balls seemed to say...

...but as he fell into the spikey death pit below, he knew it probably didn't matter

First Regurgitation Pumping Station Sign

Regurgitation Pumping Station[]

The last of the Goo Balls didn't seem to know that they were extremely delicious

or about the nature of the smelly pit in which they found themselves.

They said something about this being the last level of the first chapter...

...whatever that means.

-the Sign Painter

The second sign in Regurgitation Pumping Station, reading: "You might be on to something..

Second Reguritation Pumping Station Sign

You might be on to something...

It will be a tight fit, you might have to leave some behind...

but that's probably ok, we're all in it together

-the signpainter was here too

Trivia[]

- In some trailers, an additional level of Chapter 1 could be seen known as “Straight Up”. The level takes place in a fireplace, and would be about building straight up as the name suggests.
